Dear Alex,
Thanks very very much for your detailed answer!
I understand more or less that a VNC-based solution should be used. I should contact the administrator of the HPC and try to get help from him. I hope it can work since it is a CPUs cluster which may not have GPUs on that.
Anyway, thanks really very much for all your help!

Dear Alex,
Thanks very much for your reply!
This issue sounds like a complicated technical problem. I do not understand this much, maybe it is difficult for me to keep trying to use remote X windows.
However, I am wondering whether it is possible to visualize the results through Xmanager in the future? It seems if Xmanger supports OpenGL, this issue can be solved.
I think the advantage of using a remote X window is that we do not need to download the dump files which sometimes is huge.

Dear Alex,
Yestoday occasionally I found that Xmanger can be used to display the results on a remote HPC, so I tried to visualize my results with Xmanger, in that case, I do not need to download the large LAMMPS dump file. After extracted OVITO on the HPC and connected to the HPC with Xshell, I used ./ovito to evoke OVITO, however, it failed with the following errors:
Code: [Select]
Qt: XKEYBOARD extension not present on the X server.
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
I found that it is OK if I use evince to display a PDF or eog to display a jpg file with Xmanger on the HPC, so I think probably my problem is relevant to OVITO. Due to the limited knowledge of Linux, I do not know how to sovle this even with lots of search with Google. Could you please tell me how to fix this problem?
By the way, I think the advantage of running OVITO on the HPC and displaying the result by something like Xmanager is that we do not need to download the huge dump files, we only need to transfer the result of the remote displayer, it seems faster. However, I only found Xmanger which only supports Windows can do this job, is there any possible solutions on Linux platform like Ubuntu? And I am just starting to try this method out, any commet would be much appreciated!
Thanks very much in advance!

Support Forum / Re: What is the function of Ovito.conf at ~/.config/Ovito?

Dear Dr. Alexander Stukowski,
Thanks very much for your reply!
I feel this file is very useful. I just moved to another computer. I can use my customized modifiers with just copying the file to the new computer. Maybe the function of this file can be written in the manual of OVITO if you think it is necessary. It can save lots of time if one wants to preserve some personal configurations.

With My Best Regards,

Dear Alexander Stukowski and everyone,
Occasionally I found that there is a file named Ovito.conf at location ~/.config/Ovito. Could you please tell me what is the function of this file? It seems the information of customized modifier is stored in this file. Maybe it can be used to save personal configurations when one tries to move to a new computer. Please tell me more about this file.
Thanks very much in advance!

Support Forum / Re: Graphic card and type of rendering pictures

Dear Dr. Stukowski,
Thanks very much!
I am glad that it saved my money since in this case I do not need to buy a dedicated graphics card.
One more question is that what is the role of RAM in the processing progress? A higher value of RAM is always recommended, is that right?
I am not familiar with the technique of rendering pictures. The reason I'd like to ask for support of vector graphics is that it seems Latex support them well. Since there is difficulty and is not very worth to do that, I can output pictures in high resolution. I am sorry maybe my previous request is not very proper.

Best Regards

Dear Dr. Stukowski,
Thanks very much for your reply!
1. I think usually my system contains less than 1 million atoms. Is Intel HD graphics 530 integrated graphics card in 6th generation CPU good enough for me? A better graphics card only give better interactive preformance, or it also speeds up the process?
2. Actually, I am kind of hoping OVITO can support rendering vector graphics. Do you think it is worth to add this function?

Best Regards

Hello Dr. Stukowski and everyone,
I have two questions.
1. What kind of graphic card do I need if I use OVITO to render pictures and movies? I mean integrated graphic card or dedicated graphic card? And what is level needed? Better graphic card only speeds up the process or can offer a higher quality? Could you please give me some suggestions if I want to buy a new laptop or PC?
2. Is that possible to add some types of vector graphics to render pictures? For example pictures in eps or pdf format.
Thanks very much in advance!

Best Regards

Dr.Alexander Stukowski,
Thanks very much for your help! It works.

Dr.Alexander Stukowski,
I think I have found how to draw a arrow by tweaking the axis tripod. So, my previous questions only left the one about importing VTK.

Best Regards

Dr.Alexander Stukowski,
Thank you very much! It seems complicated for me as I never heard about VTK before. Adding a plane is not mandatory for me. I think I will work on that later. I have tried to import your attached VTK file into OVITO, however, I am sorry I did not find out how to import the file? Could you please tell me?
And one more request is that is that possible to draw an arrow in the rendered image to indicate a direction?
Thanks very much in advance!

Best Regards

Dear RU,
Thanks very much! It is wonderful!

Best Regards

Hello Dr.Alexander Stukowski and everyone,
My questions are:
1. How can I include the axis tripod in the rendered pictures? I want to use it to indicate the direction in my simulation.
2. If I want to output my selected particles together with a (111) plane in my picture, what should I do? It seems the `slice modifier` only gives lines of the boundary of the plane. I'd like to have a full plane. And it's much better if I can change the color of it.
Any help would be much appreciated!
